What's Sofia's* Story?

Sofia is a single mother with an 8 year old daughter who fled to the United States from Honduras four years ago.

She had been working but lost her construction job when it was discovered she was pregnant.

Sofia came to the U.S. under an asylum plea and due to some difficult circumstances, has been unable to obtain a work permit and permanent residency.

Without a work permit it is extremely difficult for her to provide for herself and her 8 year old daughter already. And because of this difficulty, when she found out she was pregnant, she contemplated abortion and made an appointment in Bristol.

The Lord had other plans for Sofia, and He intervened at the abortion mill in Bristol. Christians with our outreach team in Bristol were there that day. They called her to repentance and offered her help.

Praise the Lord, she listened!

Sofia chose to love her baby daughter as herself that day, and now she needs our help.

She wants to work, but is unable to legally apply for jobs and currently speaks no English.

Our outreach team connected her to the diaconate at Westminster Presbyterian Church and they have been assessing her needs and assisting her for several months with her living expenses for things like rent, phone, utilities, groceries, and gas.

They have also consulted with an attorney on her behalf and have learned there is a path to a visa for her that would solve the issues with her immigration status so she can work and provide for her girls herself.

How can you help?

There are many significant challenges in Sofia’s circumstances and we don’t have all the answers yet. We are continuing to evaluate the options for more sustainable long term solutions.

She is due with her daughter on June 15th.

For the time being, we would like to raise funds for basic living expenses to continue assisting her through the end of July, as well as covering the legal fees necessary to start the lengthy legal process toward a work permit and residency.

Funding these needs would give her the peace of mind that she has a place to live for the next few months until after the baby comes. It would get the process started to clear a path to legally working to support her family. It would also allow us some more time to evaluate possible long term solutions for her living situation.

She is currently in regular attendance at a Spanish speaking church, attends Bible study, and has been reading the Bible we have given her.
